OVERVIEW

Prescott and his protege prepare for an assignment at an unspecified location in the American West. The story is told from the perspective of the unnamed protege. In the protege’s account, Prescott is rough, but he is also funny and charming.

The protege recognizes that his mentor is manipulating him. Perhaps some of that manipulation is to be expected, an unsavory but inevitable occupational hazard. And perhaps some might even be taken for kindness. But how much manipulation, and how much opaqueness about the work they are doing, should the protege tolerate?

The protege documents the careful preparations he and his mentor make for their assignment, alone together in a small and solitary space.

The assignment is conducted, and both protege and mentor must decide how they will come to terms with who they are and what they have done.
